An Excel function that finds a value in the first column of a range and returns a value from another column in the same row.
VLOOKUP searches the first column of a selected table range and returns the value from a specified column on the matching row. Setting up the function means choosing the lookup value, the range, the return column number and the match option. The lookup column must sit to the left of the value being returned. For a product code that must match exactly, the exact-match option matters. Approximate matching assumes the lookup column is sorted and can return a different result. A useful check is therefore whether the formula is configured for the kind of match the task requires.

Tapestry’s Trading Analyst role in London required strong Excel skills, including building analytical tools and reports using VLOOKUP, PivotTables and SUMIF. VLOOKUP was therefore a named reporting skill within the role. The employer named the function without specifying the tables or formulas the employee would use in a particular report.
