Luxury Lexicon A definition

Vamp

The front section of a shoe’s upper that covers the top of the foot.

The vamp forms the front area of the upper over the toes and top of the foot. It is an outer component, while a vamp lining is the separate layer inside that part of the shoe. Its material and shaping contribute to the form of the finished upper. Crockett & Jones describes blocking the high vamp of a Chelsea boot by applying pressure with a blade before it sits on the last. This illustrates how a vamp can require shaping as well as cutting to produce the intended form.

In job listings

Vamp belongs to shoemaking and design rather than to recruiting language. A footwear designer or pattern maker uses it daily, and an advisor may use it to describe where a shoe creases or how lacing sits. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
