Using existing or discarded products and materials to make something with added value.
Upcycling transforms an existing product or discarded material into a new item with added value. Work starts with the available material, whose condition, dimensions and construction constrain what can be made. A maker can then redesign, cut and assemble it for a new purpose, such as turning garment offcuts into an accessory. The transformation distinguishes upcycling from simply passing an unchanged item to another owner. Repair can extend the life of the original product without creating a different one. Reuse or repurposing only establishes upcycling when the change also adds value.
