A fine, lightweight net fabric used in garments, veils and decoration.
Tulle is a fine, lightweight net whose open mesh gives it a different structure from a solid woven cloth. Traditional bobbinet tulle has a hexagonal mesh and is associated with machinery developed in Britain in the early nineteenth century. Tulle can also be produced by knitting, so the name alone does not establish the manufacturing method. Machine net has been used for dresses and as a ground for embroidery. When identifying a material, distinguish the net itself from any embroidery added to it, since the ground and its decoration describe different parts of the fabric.

Tulle comes up in bridal, eveningwear and accessories work more than in a vacancy. Designers and alteration staff may need to know how this fine net holds shape, and how a hem or seam is finished. Search local jobs for “fashion”.
