Luxury Lexicon A definition

Traffic stopping

In beauty retail, traffic stopping is the practice of approaching people passing a counter and inviting them to engage with the product.

The first part of the job is to start a conversation with someone who has yet to approach the counter. A fragrance adviser might offer to introduce a scent or ask whether the visitor would like to try it. That invitation is a different task from measuring footfall, which counts people passing or entering a space. It is also different from clienteling, where an adviser follows up with someone whose preferences are already known.

In job listings

For a Givenchy beauty ambassador in Edinburgh, LVMH asked for contact with customers both at the counter and through traffic stopping. In that posting the phrase describes how an adviser initiates contact. The sales targets listed elsewhere in the role measure a later stage of the visit. Search local jobs for “beauty ambassador”.
