The part of a shoe that encloses the toes.
The toe box encloses the toes, and its available space varies with the shape used to make the shoe. Grenson describes its 201G last as having a rounded toe and a roomy toe box, while its 205F last has a generous toe box within a bulkier shape. These descriptions show why a size label alone gives an incomplete account of the forefoot space. Shape retention is a separate construction question. Grenson identifies the toe puff as reinforcement placed between the outer upper and its lining to help the shoe retain its shape.

The toe box comes up in fittings and in product development. A footwear advisor may use the word to explain where a shoe feels tight, and a designer or developer has to balance its shape against the look of the toe. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
