A craftsperson who cuts, makes, alters and fits garments, chiefly structured ones such as jackets, coats and trousers.
A tailor’s work can cover the making of new garments or the alteration of finished clothing. In making, a pattern provides the template for cutting, and construction brings the pieces together with the shaping and internal materials needed for the garment. The Savile Row Bespoke Association describes an individually handmade pattern cut by a Master Cutter for each bespoke garment. Alterations work begins with an existing garment and the changes required for its wearer. A job title therefore needs to be read alongside its duties to establish the balance between cutting, making and fitting.

Dolce&Gabbana asked its tailor in London to fit garments on clients, decide which alterations were needed and carry them out while preserving the original style and construction. Its Sloane Street boutique particularly needed fittings, repairs and womenswear alterations. These duties explain how a tailor can work with a garment that has already been made.
