Securing gemstones in a metal mount so that each is held firmly and shows to best effect.
Stone setting uses the metal of a mount to secure a gemstone while controlling how much of it remains visible. In a prong setting, metal supports are bent over the stone and tightened into contact with its crown. A bezel surrounds the stone with a rim of metal that is worked over its edge. Channel settings hold stones between metal walls, while pavé arrangements cover a surface with closely placed small stones. The choice affects both appearance and protection. A setter must account for the gemstone’s durability because the pressure used to secure it can also cause damage.
