Luxury Lexicon A definition

Stocktaking

Physically counting stock and checking it against inventory records.

Stocktaking establishes how much inventory is physically present and compares that result with the quantity recorded in the inventory system. Staff count and record items, identify differences and investigate them as part of reconciliation. Scanners can assist the count, but the purpose remains to verify actual stock rather than rely solely on existing records. A complete stocktake covers all inventory within its defined scope. Cycle counting applies the same checking principle to selected portions on a recurring schedule, so the two approaches can support each other.
