An item intended to be a prominent visual focus in an outfit.
A statement piece gives an outfit a clear visual focus through features such as scale, shape, colour or decoration. It can be a garment or an accessory, and its effect depends partly on what surrounds it. Voluminous sleeves, for example, can make the upper part of a dress the dominant feature. When building an outfit, a stylist considers which item should draw attention and how the remaining pieces support that choice. The term describes an item’s visual role in a particular look. A prominent logo or a high price alone does not establish that role.

This is a phrase for stylists, client advisors and buyers rather than for vacancies. An advisor may suggest one when building a look, and may recommend keeping the rest of the outfit simpler. Search local jobs for “stylist”.
