Luxury Lexicon A definition

Shank

A reinforcing piece beneath the arch of a shoe, between the insole and outsole.

The shank reinforces the section of a shoe beneath the arch, between the forefoot and heel. Paraboot describes it as a rigid piece placed between the insole and the sole or midsole, and lists metal, leather and beechwood as possible materials. Its position explains its structural role: it gives rigidity to the arch section while other parts of the sole can have different properties. A shank is an internal reinforcing component, distinct from the outsole that contacts the ground and from a cushioning layer intended to soften contact underfoot.

In job listings

Few listings mention the shank. It matters in footwear development and quality work, where this hidden part supports the arch, and in repairs, where a broken or weak shank changes how the whole shoe feels. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
