A probation period is an initial period of employment during which performance and suitability for the role are assessed.
The employer and employee can use this period to discuss how the work is going and what is expected before the next review. Its duration and conditions belong to the terms of the particular job. In Great Britain, the written statement of employment particulars must identify the length and conditions of any probation period. A reference to probation in an advertisement does not tell the candidate the length of the period or what notice applies.

Puig asked a London HR advisor to track probationary periods and work with managers on performance issues during them. In that advertisement, probation was a process the advisor would help administer for colleagues. The listing was not specifying the probation terms of the advisor’s own job.
