Pro rata means that an amount is calculated in proportion to a stated basis, such as contracted hours.
If a post carries half the hours of the full-time post and a particular allowance is calculated strictly in proportion to hours, the pro rata allowance is half the full-time amount. The arithmetic depends on the basis the employer chooses. Hours, days worked and time employed during the year are different bases. An advertised full-time equivalent figure therefore needs the working pattern before it can be read as the amount for the part-time role.

La Prairie advertised 33 days of annual leave, including bank holidays, for a beauty consultant in Birmingham. The house said it would adjust the allowance in proportion to the employee’s working days. Someone working part of the week would need their own working pattern to work out the allowance offered.
