Luxury Lexicon A definition

Patina

A surface appearance that develops through use, ageing or deliberate treatment, particularly on leather or metal.

Patina describes a surface appearance produced through ageing, use or deliberate treatment. In leather work, Berluti presents patina as a treatment that revives colour and nourishes the leather. In metalwork, the Getty describes chemical patination as applying solutions to the surface and allowing them to react with the metal. A sequence of applications can develop the intended colour, and the alloy itself influences the result. The useful distinction is between a surface that develops over time and one deliberately created by a maker. Both uses concern the surface, while the treatment process depends on the material.

Berluti’s London Client Advisor posting explicitly described the house’s interest in leather and patina alongside its footwear know-how. This places the term within the employer’s account of its products and expertise. Recognising a patina can help an adviser discuss a piece. Search local jobs for “shoes”.
