Luxury Lexicon A definition

Outsole

The bottom layer of a shoe’s sole that comes into contact with the ground.

The outsole forms the ground-facing surface of a shoe’s sole assembly. Paraboot describes leather and rubber versions, so the term identifies the component rather than a single material. Its position separates it from the insole inside the shoe and any intermediate midsole. Material and layering affect the finished sole: Tricker’s describes a double leather sole as adding structure and protection, and a studded Dainite rubber sole as providing grip. When comparing shoes, identifying the ground-contact layer first helps distinguish the outsole material from the construction of the complete sole assembly.

In job listings

The outsole comes up in product development, quality checks and repairs more than in the wording of a vacancy. Sales staff may need the word when a client asks about grip, wear or whether a sole can be replaced. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
