The shape and edge of a garment’s opening around the neck.
A neckline establishes the outline of a garment around the neck and can influence the balance of the whole design. It may sit high or low, run symmetrically around the body or use an off-centre shape. Designers can assess its effect through drawings, patterns and fabric draped on a dress form. During construction, the edge needs a suitable finish so that the intended shape is maintained. The neckline is the opening and its outline. A collar is a separate fabric feature that may be attached around that opening.
