The checks and accounting work used to complete a month’s financial records.
Month-end close brings an accounting period’s records to a state suitable for reporting. Finance staff check completeness, reconcile balances and post necessary adjustments, including accruals or other entries relevant to the period. They then complete the reporting work and close the old posting period under the organisation’s accounting procedures. The sequence helps prevent incomplete or incorrectly timed records from distorting monthly results. Closing a period is broader than producing a report: the report depends on the checks and adjustments that establish the figures it contains.
