Luxury Lexicon A definition

Monk strap

A shoe fastened by a strap and one or more buckles instead of laces.

A monk strap uses a strap and buckle to close the shoe instead of laces. Single and double versions are distinguished by the number of buckles. Crockett & Jones describes the style as having construction and fitting qualities similar to a Derby, with open quarters and a vamp and tongue cut together. The fastening identifies the style independently of decorative details on the toe or upper. A plain black single monk and a more detailed double monk remain members of the same category. A loafer’s decorative strap does not perform this closing function.

In job listings

A listing is unlikely to single this style out. In men’s footwear, it is part of the range a specialist knows, usually explained to a client by its one or two buckles and by how it sits between formal and relaxed dress. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
