Luxury Lexicon A definition

Markdown

A reduction from a product’s previous selling price.

A markdown changes the selling price of merchandise downward from its previous level. Retail teams can plan reductions across product lines and compare sales progress with the amount of stock remaining. A markdown rule can specify when a reduction should occur, helping teams apply a consistent pricing procedure rather than deciding each change separately. Planning the reduction and carrying it out are different responsibilities, so stock or operations staff may implement a price decision made elsewhere. In a technology role, Markdown can also name a text-formatting language, which requires a separate reading of the job description.
