Luxury Lexicon A definition

Lost-wax casting

Casting metal in a mould formed around a wax model, which is burned out to leave a cavity for the metal.

Lost-wax casting starts with a model of the desired piece made in wax. The model is enclosed in an investment material that forms the casting mould. Heating removes the wax and prepares the investment to receive molten metal, which fills the cavity left by the model. Once the casting is released, further workshop operations bring it towards its finished form. Burnout is a distinct production stage: Ganoksin’s technical account connects problems at this stage with rough surfaces and incomplete castings. Casting establishes the metal form, while subsequent finishing works on its surfaces.

Roles in jewellery production and model making are where this process belongs. A bench jeweller should understand it even if casting is outsourced, since finishing and repair depend on how a piece was made. Search local jobs for “jewellery”.
