Luxury Lexicon A definition

Hem

The finished edge of a garment or fabric, often made by folding and securing the edge.

A hem finishes an exposed fabric edge, commonly at the bottom of a garment or the end of a sleeve. A folded hem turns fabric inward before it is secured, and a hem gauge helps the maker keep the intended depth consistent. The choice of finish depends on the fabric and the appearance required. Machine stitching can remain visible, while a blind hem aims to make the securing stitches less noticeable from the outside. Hem depth and finished garment length are related measurements, but they describe different aspects of the work.

Hemming is among the alterations most often named in a tailoring vacancy. Look for whether the job also covers more complex alterations, because a hem is the starting point in most in-store alteration work. Search local jobs for “tailor”.
