Luxury Lexicon A definition

Guest relations

Work concerned with welcoming guests or clients and supporting their experience in a hospitality or retail setting.

In a hotel, guest relations focuses on the experience a guest has throughout a stay. In retail, the term can also describe welcoming and supporting visitors to a boutique. Staff gather preferences, respond to special requests and deal with feedback or complaints, coordinating with the teams that can act on them. A request may need to pass from the person speaking with the guest to front office, housekeeping or food and beverage staff. Clear records help those teams understand what has been requested and maintain continuity. The defining responsibility is following the guest’s experience across these contacts. Particular jobs may combine this work with reception or other service duties, so their scope needs checking.

Dior’s New Bond Street boutique advertised a guest relations intern to host customers and support its sales team. The intern would welcome people entering the boutique and recognise returning customers and VIPs. Here, guest relations concerns the visitor’s arrival and experience in a shop, a responsibility the house distinguished from making the sale. Search local jobs for “guest relations”.
