Goodyear-welted

A shoe construction in which a welt joins the upper to the insole assembly and is separately stitched to the outsole.

Goodyear-welted construction uses a welt as the connection between the shoe’s upper assembly and its outsole. Crockett & Jones describes stitching the upper leather, lining and welt to ribbing already bonded to the insole. A separate seam attaches the outsole to the welt. Cheaney describes cork filler between the insole and outsole. The two seams distinguish this method from Blake construction, where the upper and insole are stitched directly to the sole. Carmina notes that the additional leather layers make Goodyear-welted shoes slightly less flexible than Blake-stitched shoes.

A men’s footwear role may ask for product knowledge without naming Goodyear welting, yet this is one of the first constructions a shoe specialist learns. It lets an advisor explain why a shoe can be resoled and how it wears over time. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
