Luxury Lexicon A definition

Goldsmith

A maker who forms, solders, assembles and repairs jewellery in gold and other precious metals at the bench.

A goldsmith works precious metal into finished objects, including jewellery, and may also repair existing pieces. The name is broader than working in gold alone. Heritage Crafts describes goldsmithing as making objects in gold, silver, platinum and palladium, and treats goldsmith as an umbrella term that includes jewellers and silversmiths. Workshop tasks can include forming components, soldering joints, assembling parts and finishing surfaces. A job title may emphasise one part of this work, such as polishing, while the broader craft covers the making and repair of the object.

Buccellati’s Marketing and Communications Executive posting in London described hand engraving as a technique rooted in goldsmithing traditions. The craft term appeared in the explanation of the house’s creations. Its use shows how a communications role can encounter the vocabulary of making, without indicating that the employee would carry out bench work. Search local jobs for “jewellery”.
