Luxury Lexicon A definition

GMT watch

A watch that shows a second time zone, usually with an extra hour hand that turns once in 24 hours against a 24-hour scale.

A GMT watch lets its wearer read two time zones simultaneously, commonly local time and home time. In the familiar extra-hand layout, a hand makes one revolution in 24 hours and is read against a matching scale, which also distinguishes daytime from nighttime. Other dual-time displays use a separate subsidiary dial. Setting arrangements vary, so the wearer needs to identify which hour display a crown position or pusher adjusts. A GMT display serves a different purpose from a world-time display, which uses city names and a time scale to present times across multiple zones.

Watch sales roles expect this sort of product knowledge. An advisor may be asked how to set the second time zone on a particular model, and may need to distinguish a GMT watch from one that shows world time. Search local jobs for “watchmaker”.
