The way a garment sits on the body, including its shape, ease and freedom of movement.
Fit concerns how a garment’s dimensions and shape work on a body. Ease is part of that relationship: wearing ease provides room for comfort, while design ease adds room to create the intended outline. A loose garment can therefore fit as intended, and a close garment can restrict movement even when its labelled size appears appropriate. Assessing fit means considering the intended shape alongside the space available to the wearer. Pattern shape, fabric and construction all affect the result, so a size label alone cannot explain how a finished garment will sit or move.

Burberry’s Senior Pattern Cutter role in London required an understanding of fit, proportion, balance and body movement, alongside the relationship between fabric, pattern and construction. This placed fit within technical garment development. The role connected the intended shape of a garment with how the finished piece would behave on the body.
