Luxury Lexicon A definition

Fine jewellery

Jewellery made in gold, platinum, silver or palladium, often set with gemstones, as distinct from costume jewellery.

Fine jewellery is a material category built around precious metals, often combined with gemstones. CIBJO identifies gold, platinum, silver and palladium as the precious metals used in the trade. Understanding a piece therefore includes knowing its metal and metal content as well as its stones and design. A precious-metal coating and a precious-metal body describe different constructions. Fine jewellery also differs from high jewellery, a house’s exceptional tier of work associated with rare stones and particular craftsmanship. A recognisable collection design can belong to fine jewellery without being a unique high jewellery creation.
