Luxury Lexicon A definition

Embroidery

Decoration stitched into cloth, leather or another ground with thread or fine wire, by hand or by machine.

Embroidery creates a decorative design by stitching thread or fine wire into a supporting material. The ground can be cloth, leather, paper or another material capable of receiving the stitches. Hand embroidery uses a needle to build the design, while machine embroidery produces decorative stitching mechanically. The defining feature is the stitched decoration, rather than whether the work is handmade. This separates embroidery from an ordinary construction seam, whose main purpose is joining garment parts. A raised design woven into fabric during weaving belongs to brocading, a different process.

Golden Goose wanted its Bicester sneaker maker to bring some embroidery and basic sewing skills along with drawing and painting. Embroidery was one way the employee could decorate a shoe. The house sought several making skills for this role, rather than a specialist embroiderer. Search local jobs for “embroidery”.
