Luxury Lexicon A definition

Denim

A durable, usually cotton fabric with a twill weave, often made with indigo-dyed warp yarns and lighter weft yarns.

Denim’s diagonal structure comes from its twill weave, usually arranged as a 2×1 or 3×1 twill. In conventional indigo denim, the lengthwise warp yarns are dyed blue and the crosswise filling yarns remain white. The warp dominates the fabric’s face, giving the two sides different appearances. CottonWorks also describes denim made with dyed filling yarns, so blue yarns against white yarns are a familiar construction rather than a rule for every version. Understanding the weave helps separate the fabric itself from the colour or finish applied to a particular garment.

Alexander McQueen’s Collection Development Manager role in London included managing denim alongside leatherwear, outerwear and other categories. This placed denim within collection development responsibilities. Here denim names a collection category as well as the fabric used to make garments. Search local jobs for “denim”.
