Luxury Lexicon A definition

Dart

A stitched fold that takes in fabric to shape a garment around the body.

A dart takes in a controlled amount of fabric within a garment section so that flat material follows the body’s contours. The maker marks the fold and stitching lines, folds the fabric and stitches the dart to create the intended shaping. Darts commonly shape areas around the waist, bust or shoulder. Their position and size affect the finished garment’s form and fit. Unlike a seam joining separate panels, a dart can shape a single piece of fabric. A decorative tuck may resemble a dart, but its purpose need not be body shaping.

A dart is basic vocabulary for pattern cutters, dressmakers and alteration staff, so vacancies may take it for granted. A fitter may take in or let out a dart to adjust the shape of a garment. Search local jobs for “garment”.
