Luxury Lexicon A definition

Crêpe

Fabric with a crinkled or grainy surface, produced through its yarns, construction or finishing.

Crêpe describes a crinkled or grainy textile surface rather than one fibre or one weave. The texture can be produced with hard-twisted yarns, varied weaving tensions, caustic-soda printing or embossing. A crêpe weave provides another construction-based explanation: warp and filling intersections and floats are arranged in an irregular order, leaving no apparent lines or visible repeat. This distinction matters when interpreting a fabric description. Two materials called crêpe may obtain their surface through different processes, so the name alone cannot establish their yarn structure, fibre content or method of manufacture. Those details require a fuller material specification.

In job listings

Crepe appears in fabric development and product descriptions rather than in the wording of a vacancy. Designers and alteration staff may need to account for how its grainy surface and give behave when cut and sewn. Search local jobs for “fabric developer”.
