Luxury Lexicon A definition

Concession

A branded selling area within another retailer’s premises, operated under an agreement with that retailer.

A retail concession allows a brand to sell from an area inside another retailer’s premises under an agreement between the businesses. A cosmetics counter in a department store is a familiar example. The arrangement establishes how the selling space and related operations are handled, with details varying between agreements. Concession merchandise may also need to be identified separately as it moves through the host retailer’s distribution system. The presence of branded products alone does not establish a concession arrangement, since a retailer can also buy products through wholesale and sell them within its own operation.
