Luxury Lexicon A definition

Colour blocking

A design using distinct areas of contrasting solid colours.

Colour blocking organises a design into distinct areas of solid colour. Those areas can be created by joining differently coloured fabric pieces, as in the Saint Laurent dress discussed by the Metropolitan Museum of Art, or by arranging contrasting garments in an outfit. The effect depends on the relationship between the areas, including their size, placement and contrast. A garment with separate coloured panels therefore has colour blocking built into its design, while a stylist can create a comparable effect through combinations. Joining coloured panels is a construction method, whereas the term describes the visible arrangement.

In job listings

This is the language of stylists, designers and visual merchandisers more than recruiters. A role in styling or merchandising may call for arranging colour this way, whether or not the listing uses the phrase. Search local jobs for “stylist”.
