Luxury Lexicon A definition

Cap toe

A shoe with a distinct cap section over the toe, usually formed by an additional piece of upper material.

A cap toe has a distinct section over the front of the shoe, usually created by stitching an additional piece of upper material over the toe. Barker describes this construction in its account of cap-toe Oxfords. The seam marking the cap helps identify the feature when examining the upper. A cap describes the treatment of the toe, while Oxford describes a lacing arrangement, so the two terms supply different information about the same shoe. Identifying the cap separately also avoids confusing a panel boundary with decorative perforations or stitching elsewhere on the upper.

In job listings

Expect this word on the shop floor and in product notes rather than in a job description. A men’s footwear advisor may use it when comparing formal styles, and a designer may use it when specifying how the upper is cut. Search local jobs for “footwear”.
