Luxury Lexicon A definition

Accounts receivable

Amounts owed by customers, and the work of recording and collecting them.

Accounts receivable follows money due from customers through invoicing, payment allocation and collection. Staff issue or process invoices, match incoming payments to the correct customer records and investigate unpaid or disputed amounts. A sale can therefore appear in the accounts before the customer has paid. Once payment is received and allocated, the outstanding receivable is reduced. This differs from accounts payable, which handles obligations to suppliers. Accurate allocation matters because receiving money does not by itself establish which invoice or customer balance that payment settles.

Louis Vuitton’s Accounts Receivable Intern role in London emphasised accurate, timely posting and reconciliation of cash and credit card receipts. The posting linked completion of this processing to month-end reporting deadlines, illustrating how incoming-payment records feed the wider financial reporting timetable.
