Amounts owed to suppliers, and the work of checking and paying those invoices.
Accounts payable covers both unpaid supplier balances and the process used to settle them. Staff record incoming invoices, check their details, resolve queries and arrange payment. Accurate supplier records help payments reach the correct recipient, while reconciliation helps identify differences between records. An invoice can remain payable while a dispute or processing issue is being resolved. The distinction from accounts receivable is the direction of the obligation: payable concerns money the business owes its suppliers, whereas receivable concerns money owed to the business by its customers.
