About Harrods
Established in 1849, Harrods is one of the world’s most celebrated luxury department stores, distinguished by its Knightsbridge address, exceptional product selection and tradition of attentive service. As an employer, it brings together expertise across fashion, beauty, fine jewellery, food, hospitality, buying, digital commerce and corporate functions. Its environment combines British retail heritage with the evolving expectations of an international clientele, placing particular importance on product knowledge, discretion and operational precision. For professionals drawn to luxury retail, Harrods offers the opportunity to contribute to a globally recognised institution where commercial expertise and thoughtful customer service shape the experience of the brand.
Harrods is seeking a Group Tax Lead to own its UK and international tax agenda, lead a team of three, oversee governance and compliance, and manage HMRC and adviser relationships. The permanent role requires substantial post-qualification experience and combines technical leadership with process improvement and stakeholder partnership.
Role & Responsibilities
- Own the Group tax framework and calendar, ensuring statutory obligations, payments, filings and key internal deliverables are completed accurately and on time.
- Establish and maintain robust, proportionate tax governance, controls and documentation, including Senior Accounting Officer, Corporate Criminal Offence, Tax Strategy and Business Risk Review requirements.
- Identify emerging tax risks and legislative changes, assess their implications for Harrods and ensure appropriate actions are implemented.
- Own the relationship with HMRC, fostering open and credible dialogue and leading responses to enquiries, reviews and other tax authority interactions.
- Lead a team of three, supporting its development and reviewing roles, responsibilities and structures as the operating model evolves.
- Own tax reporting, compliance and audit deliverables, working effectively with senior finance stakeholders, auditors, tax authorities and external advisers.
- Improve tax processes, controls and ways of working, reducing unnecessary manual effort and increasing internal capability.
- Constructively challenge established approaches, external adviser recommendations and associated spend.
Qualifications
- ACA and/or CTA qualified, or holds an equivalent professional qualification.
- Substantial post-qualification experience commensurate with the breadth and seniority of the role.
- Broad UK tax experience in a complex group environment, ideally combining in-house experience with a strong grounding in a major professional services or tax advisory firm.
- Strong technical foundation in UK corporation tax and tax accounting, with sufficient breadth across indirect tax, governance and international tax to lead the Group agenda and identify when specialist input is required.
- Proven experience owning tax reporting, compliance and audit deliverables, while working effectively with senior finance stakeholders, auditors, tax authorities and external advisers.
- Experience leading and developing teams, with the confidence to review roles, responsibilities and team structures when the operating model needs to evolve.
- Strong commercial judgement and confidence to constructively challenge established approaches, external adviser recommendations and associated spend.
- Excellent communication and influencing skills, including the ability to explain complex tax matters to finance and non-finance audiences.
- Independent, organised and proactive approach, with the ability to balance strategic priorities and technical detail, manage multiple deadlines and take ownership without direction.
