About Burberry

Burberry Limited, a quintessentially British luxury fashion house, is renowned for its innovative designs and commitment to quality. As part of the global luxury conglomerate, Burberry offers a dynamic and inclusive work environment where creativity and excellence are at the forefront. The company is dedicated to fostering a culture that encourages diversity and sustainability, making it a leader in the luxury industry.

Burberry is recruiting three permanent Engineers for its Commerce, Content and Fulfilment squads, responsible for building, testing, deploying, and operating production software within a DevOps model. The role collaborates with product, architecture, delivery, and operations colleagues and requires attendance at the Central London office four days a week.

Role & Responsibilities

  • Design, develop, test, deploy, and operate squad software against user stories, acceptance criteria, and technical specifications produced by Product Analysts.
  • Write clean, maintainable, secure, well-tested code aligned with engineering standards and best practices defined by the Engineering Manager.
  • Participate in agile ceremonies, including sprint planning, refinement, stand-ups, reviews, and retrospectives, contributing to estimation, sequencing, and technical approach.
  • Contribute to backlog refinement by assessing technical feasibility, identifying risks and dependencies early, and shaping stories into deliverable increments.
  • Own the operational health of the squad’s product under a DevOps model, including monitoring, incident response, root cause analysis, and reliability improvements in collaboration with Digital Operations.
  • Conduct peer code reviews, provide constructive technical feedback, and uphold engineering quality across the squad.
  • Build and maintain automated tests, including A/B tests, to support continuous integration and continuous deployment pipelines.
  • Collaborate with Solution Architects to ensure implementations align with approved solution designs, escalating design constraints, non-functional requirements, or trade-offs that need review.
  • Support and challenge third-party delivery partners embedded within the squad, including contingent and outsourced engineers, scrutinising their approach, estimates, and quality against Burberry engineering standards.
  • Contribute to the squad’s technical roadmap by raising technical debt, platform constraints, and innovation opportunities with the Lead Engineer and Senior Engineering & Delivery Lead.
  • Develop and retain deep product, platform, and domain knowledge, contributing to squad continuity over time.
  • Support knowledge-sharing across Digital engineering, including communities of practice, internal documentation, and onboarding new joiners.
  • Adhere to security, data protection, accessibility, and technical governance standards in all work.

Qualifications

  • Proven hands-on software engineering experience in a product-oriented Digital technology environment, ideally involving consumer-facing web and/or commerce platforms.
  • Strong technical craft across relevant parts of the Digital technology stack, with the ability to design, build, test, and operate production software.
  • Comfort working in an agile, Scrum-based delivery model, contributing to ceremonies and shaping stories from refinement through release.
  • Experience operating within a DevOps model, including responsibility for monitoring, alerting, incident response, and reliability engineering.
  • Solid grounding in modern engineering practices, including CI/CD, automated testing, version control, code review, infrastructure-as-code, and observability.
  • Awareness of and adherence to security, data protection, and accessibility considerations in software development.
  • Technical confidence and credibility sufficient to scrutinise and challenge third-party partner output where appropriate.
  • Collaborative team contributor able to work within a small, cross-functional squad, with comfort around shared ownership, peer review, and continuous improvement.
  • Demonstrated appetite to retain and deepen domain knowledge over time as an enduring contributor within a long-lived squad.
  • Experience in Retail, Luxury, eCommerce, or Consumer Goods industries is beneficial.
